Our frequency response chart was measured with our old testing system. We have since purchased a Bruel & Kjaer 5128 test fixture to update our testing and data collection. The Google Nest Audio has a mute switch on the back that physically disconnects the microphone when you don’t want it listening for the hot word. To test the volume changes, I played a podcast while walking around the room with a loud hairdryer in hand. To my surprise, I still heard the host thanks to the automatic volume increase.
There are plenty of other Assistant-powered smart speakers to choose from, the best of which you can check out here. According to Google, this Nest speaker is 75% louder and has a 50% stronger bass response than the original Google Home. We think the average user will be happy with the sound quality of the device, especially since it features a sound signature that handles all genres of music and spoken word content well. Also like the Google Home, the Nest Audio is designed to play music, podcasts, and other audio media.
Is Google Home always listening?
The back of the Nest Mini contains a hole for wall-mounting with a screw, and it contains LED lights that highlight the touch areas for volume control. It is available in the colors "chalk", "charcoal", "coral", and "sky blue". If you're sold on the whole concept of talking to your virtual assistant, control your entire smart home through Google Home with voice commands. With Google Home as the centerpiece of your smart home, use voice commands to turn your lights on and off, control your television and other smart electronics, adjust your thermostat, and more. As a smart speaker, Google Home excels when used for entertainment purposes.

Is slightly better if you truly want the best of the best in terms of sound quality, but the Sonos One comes close enough and you save $100. You want the best value for money in terms of sound quality. You’ll be able to opt out of some settings, like Voice Match or personal results. You can change these settings at any time after you complete setup.
Matter devices from the brands you love.
Check out our guide to what works with Google Home for more information. Since Google Home leverages Google Assistant, take advantage of all these useful features on your phone when you leave the house. Ask Google Assistant on your phone to make the change, just as you would with your Google Home. Control your smart home devices, like lights, thermostats, and more. Listen to music and podcasts on a variety of streaming services.

Still, no other smart display does as much as this one does, and Google says that the camera data is never used for ad personalization. Thanks to its sophisticated camera and the software that powers it, Google's Nest Hub Max can learn what you look like and show you personalized bits of data whenever it recognizes your face. With a 127-degree wide angle lens, it can track you as you move about within the frame during a video call, too. It can even recognize gestures -- just raise a hand at close range to silently pause or resume audio or video playback. Model is particularly striking and looks good in the kitchen. It has the same features as the Nest Hub with a bigger screen for watching videos and more of a premium overall feel, as opposed to the cute feel of the Nest Hub.
Can Google Home Eavesdrop on Your Conversations?
Sub-bass notes are still nearly inaudible due to physical limitations, so you won’t feel a skull-shaking bump. If you’re looking for a party speaker, you’ll have to invest in the Google Home Max instead. If you have multiple Nest speakers or Nest displays in your home, you can broadcast to certain ones or to the entire house.

That said, I found it maddening to need two remotes in order to watch one program. I had to use the Roku remote in order to log into my apps and pick my show, but needed the TV remote to change the volume once I was watching it. This meant that I needed two remotes by my side at all times, which sometimes meant that I accidentally picked up the wrong remote and unwittingly activated my Samsung TV's overlay menus. I'm sure there are plenty of organized people that won't have this issue, but I found it extremely frustrating. If you like the idea of a smart speaker but also want Bluetooth so that you can bring the speaker with you when you go outside then you should check out the Sonos Move.
The first one is called Media EQ, which automatically tunes the speaker depending on what you’re listening to (music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.). Simply put, the EQ will sound markedly different when you’re listening to your favorite album compared to when Google Assistant is voicing a reply. If you’re very budget conscious and don’t really care about sound quality that much, something like the Nest Mini will be more up your alley. It’s a great device that lets you use all of Assistant’s smarts, works great for playing podcasts and audiobooks, and is decent when it comes to playing music. Just don’t expect the bass to get your blood pumping, since the device is very small.

The updated Google Home platform helps you get the most out of your devices. Increased compatibility and confident connectivity with Matter and Thread.3 Matter helps ensure your smart home is easier to build, faster to set up, and more responsive and reliable. And Thread helps extend the overall strength, capability, and reach of your smart home. Now you can view live video from your Nest cameras and doorbell, right from the home screen in your Google Home app. The new Favorites section makes it easier to access the things you care about most.
For example, in the Devialet app, you can adjust latency for A/V and customize bass for Night Mode. This hi-res stereo speaker is built with two double-dome tweeters, two FST midrange drivers, and a woofer with an 80W Class D amplifier. You can stream audio at 24-bit/96kHz resolution for state-of-the-art music. This smart speaker is super practical for your everyday life and is perfect for a smart home or dorm set up. At a mere 8 inches tall, this speaker is perfect if you're a fan of hefty sounds while keeping a clean, minimalist space. You can pair this with other Marshall Uxbridge Home Voice Speakers to play music wirelessly in multiple rooms.
The second generation sported 50% more bass and a sleep sensor. The base of the device is covered by a shell acting as a speaker grille, which is designed to be removed and replaced with one that suits the decor of a room. As of November 2016, Google offers fabric shells in "Mango", "Marine", and "Violet" color finishes, and metallic shells in "Carbon", "Copper", and "Snow" finishes.
But what makes the Home Max a smart speaker is that you can speak to it. If you don’t feel like browsing through your phone to find that new Childish Gambino song, you can just ask the Home Max to play Feels Like Summer thanks to tiny built-in microphones. Unfortunately, you can’t say “Yo Google” just yet, but “Okay Google” or “Hey Google” work just fine.

The home layout consists of a large list of your downloaded apps that appears on the right, with a menu for settings, search, and other items on the left. In September, Roku launched a new category called "The Buzz," which is available on the left-hand menu. Clicking on the Buzz leads to a seemingly endless hodge-podge of useless information and uninteresting clips. I didn't find anything that seemed relevant to my interests, but perhaps someone else might. Thankfully, Roku keeps it tucked neatly away on that left-hand menu, so you never have to look at it if you don't want to.
Every call is free since it’s through Google’s service and only requires a Wi-Fi connection. A 75mm mid-woofer and 19mm tweeter lie beneath the Nest Audio’s cloth exterior. This two-pronged approach allocates bass and midrange reproduction to the woofer, while the tweeter is tasked with high-frequency output.
